Retrofilling Power Transformers as a Lever for Circular, Low-Risk Asset Management

Read Abstract Click to expand
According to European Commission estimates, transformer losses in the EU27 and the UK waste about 2.9% of all electricity generated (around 90–100 TWh per year), making their efficiency and lifetime critical for both reliability and decarbonization. Retrofilling, understood as the replacement of mineral insulating oil in service transformers with biodegradable esters, biodegradable hydrocarbon fluids and recycled dielectric liquids, is emerging as a practical circular-economy measure that extends asset life while enhancing fire safety and environmental performance. This paper provides an integrated assessment of such retrofilling solutions from technical, environmental and techno-economic viewpoints. After reviewing the properties, ageing behaviour and field experience of biodegradable esters, biodegradable hydrocarbons, recycled dielectric fluids and mixed mineral-oil/alternative-fluid systems, a life-cycle perspective is adopted to quantify the impact of retrofilling on greenhouse-gas emissions and resource use. Cost models and utility-scale case studies show that, despite a higher upfront fluid cost, retrofills using biodegradable and recycled dielectrics can reduce total cost of ownership by avoiding fire-protection investments, lowering environmental liabilities, enabling more circular use of materials and allowing higher thermal operating margins. The implications for maintenance, diagnostics and standards are analysed, including evolving IEC and IEEE guidance and ongoing IEC JWG46 and CIGRÉ activities on retrofilling practice. Finally, emerging trends such as hybrid and nano-enhanced fluids, bio-synthetic esters, recycled-content dielectrics and sensor-integrated transformer fleets are outlined as enablers of more digital, resilient and circular transformer asset management.

Perspectives for Testing Electrical Machines in Transport Electrification

Read Abstract Click to expand
In this presentation, I will explore the latest methodologies, standard updates, and practical solutions for Partial Discharge (PD) testing in electrical machines, highlighting how diagnostic requirements fundamentally differ between the high-throughput demands of automotive mass production and the zero-tolerance safety margins of the aerospace industry. I will walk you through the key additions in the 2nd edition of IEC 60034-18-41, focusing on the newly introduced Impulse Voltage Distribution Class (IVDC) designed to address the ultra-fast voltage rise times generated by SiC and GaN semiconductors. Drawing on concrete experimental examples, I will showcase novel high-frequency, bipolar testing setups operating at inverter-like frequencies—around 20 kHz with 30 ns rise times—coupled with UHF sensors and signal processing techniques like STFT and wavelets to reliably detect PD. Additionally, we will discuss practical strategies to streamline routine manufacturing tests for PD-free stators, evaluate the feasibility of testing fully assembled machines to catch post-assembly defects and aim for zero-defect production, and examine the remaining conceptual challenges of UHF-based PD detection under low-pressure conditions in More Electric Aircraft (MEA) environments.

Diagnosing Disorder: How Nanoparticles Rewire Liquid Crystals

Read Abstract Click to expand
Doping nematic liquid crystals with nanoparticles is a small structural intervention with outsized consequences: molecular anchoring is disturbed, phase transition temperatures shift, switching thresholds move, and — in some systems — a memory effect is induced in the material's response to external fields. This lecture examines a broad family of dopants, varying in size, shape, and concentration, through a shared diagnostic framework. Application of this framework demonstrates that the direction and magnitude of the induced structural changes depend strongly on dopant identity. Across all studies, light transmission under applied electric and magnetic fields and surface acoustic wave (SAW) attenuation are serving as the two principal techniques, complemented by threshold-field analysis and nematic–isotropic transition temperature (TNI) tracking. This shared toolkit reveals how differently each dopant alters the structural response of the host liquid crystal. These results establish the induced structural disorder as a diagnostic signal rather than a confounding factor, indicating that nanoparticle type, shape, size, and concentration can be used as controllable parameters for the deliberate engineering of liquid crystal behavior in optical switching, sensing, and memory-storage applications.

Utilizing Raman Spectroscopy to Detect HVDC-Induced Material Changes in Dielectrics

Read Abstract Click to expand
Transient charge carrier mobility in solid dielectrics under high-voltage direct current (HVDC) stress contributes to power losses in transmitted power and, in the worst case, can lead to complete system failure. In recent years, growing awareness of the importance of studying the transient behavior of charges in polymer dielectrics has increased the application of Pulsed Electro Acoustic (PEA) methods to monitor the injection processes of charge densities and their dynamics. However, this method is currently limited to thin samples (< 2 mm), and the results are heavily influenced by the mathematical signal processing involved. Therefore, a direct observation of charge dynamics remains necessary. The background signal of Raman spectroscopy is highly sensitive to photoluminescence impurities. Assuming that oxygen-rich molecular charge carriers exhibit luminescence activity at a 532 nm excitation wavelength, the time resolved analysis of Raman Background signals seems to be a promising attempt to to directly observe the dynamics of charged and neutral molecules in dielectrics.
